GMAT의 SC 문제를 보면, 가끔 In That이라는 녀석이 나올 때가 있습니다. 이 녀석이 뭘 하는 녀석인지 봅시다.
* …이라는 점에서, …이므로(since, because) e.g.) The conclusion is wrong in that it is based on false premises. 잘못된 전제에 근거하고 있다는 점에서 그 결론은 틀렸다. |
GMAT에서는 in that의 일반적인 용법인 because와 조금 다르게 쓰이게 되는데,
~라는 점에서의 용법으로 different, unlike, unusual한 부분을 연결할 때 쓰인다고 합니다. 다음 예를 봅시다.
* Blue-winged warblers are unlike most species of warbler in that it is very difficult to tell the male and female apart.
* Teratomas are unusual form of cancer in that they are composed of tissues such as tooth and bone, tissues not normally found in the organ in which the tumor appears.
다음 문제는, 이 유형의 대표적인 문제인 OG, SC, 208번입니다.

* in that이 나와야 하기 때문에, 답은 D와 E중의 한가지입니다. D에서는 their composition가 tissues를 가리키는 것으로 보이지만, 적절하지 않습니다. 답은 E입니다.
* 다른 예문들을 보니 in that뒤에 S+V를 오는 형태로 많이 오던데, 근거는 발견하지 못했습니다. 참고만 하세요.

Kaplan Verbal책의 뒷부분을 보면, AS와 Like의 용법에 차이에 대해서 다음과 같이 설명합니다.
AS는 actions를 비교합니다. 그에 비해 LIKE는nouns을 비교합니다. e.g.: Like find wine, fruitcake tastes better after it has aged VS Dogs don't scratch up furniture, as cats often do do |
다른 방법으로는, Manhattan GMAT에서 제시하는 방법입니다.
* Like는 사람이나 사물을 비교하기 위해서 사용됩니다. (any nouns) * As는 Clauses(절, S+V)를 포함하는 것의 비교에 사용됩니다. (Clauses는 verb를 include하는 any phrase입니다) |

위의 기준으로 보면, Pearls가 Jump한 것은, Action인 것 같아 얼핏 답은 C 같지만(물론, one, another로 인해 obviously하게 답은 될 수 없지만) 답은 B입니다. 그런데, 답이 그렇다고 해도, like를 쓴 것은 이상해 보이지 않나요? 왜냐하면, GMAT은 늘 '경제적'인 문장 보다는 '정확'한 문장을 제시하기 때문입니다. (GMAT은 어쩔 수 없이 답이 되는 녀석보다는, 명확한 표현을 좋아합니다.)

이 곳에서 써 먹을 법 한 차이를 설명하고 있는 것을 보면, 다음과 같이 설명합니다.
1. AS는 도입 절(S+V)을 가지고 있고, LIKE는 도입 구(nouns)를 가지고 있음 (As introduces clauses (which have verbs) and like introduces phrases (which don't have verbs)) |
다른 분이 정리한 것을 봐도, as pearls do라는 문장은, 실제 은유적이 표현을 실제 현상인 것처럼 표현하고 있기 때문에 답이 아니라고 하네요.
다시 말하면 '은유적인 표현에는, like를 쓰는 것이 좋음'이라는 사실이 추가로 GMAT에서 답 가르는데 조금 도움이 될 듯 합니다.
자 그럼 자주 나오는 예문 중 다음은 어떤 문장이 좋을까요?
(1) My Siamese cat moved across the floor just like a lion stalking its prey. (2) My Siamese cat moved across the floor just as a lion stalks its prey. |
둘 중 어느 문장이 좋다고 할 수 있을까요?
위 BEATTHEGMAT링크의 설명을 보면, 두 번째 문장은 좋지 않다고 설명합니다. 이유는, 우리는 고양이의 움직임을 설명하고 있는 것이 아니기 때문입니다. (또한, as가 at the same time의 의미도 있는데, 이 또한 이 문장에서 모호함을 발생시킵니다.) 또한, 아까 말한 것처럼 은유적인 표현을 사용한다면, as보다는, like를 사용하는 것이 좋을 듯 하네요.
정리 :
(1) like는 any nouns의 비교에 사용된다.
as는 절(S+V)의 비교에 사용된다.
(2) 위의 방법으로 판단이 어려운 경우에, 은유적인 표현법을 사용하고 있는 문장이라면, like를 사용한다.
추가: 상관없는 내용이라, 본문에는 언급하지 않았지만, like관련 GMAT문제에서 강조되는 것 중 한가지는 For example의 용도로 like가 쓰인 것은 보통 답이 아닙니다. such as를 사용하세요.
